When looking for pieces with no upholstery, such as chests, dressers and tables (a.k.a. "case goods" in the world of furniture), get to know what material they are made of - is it softwood or hardwood? High quality pieces of furniture are available in both soft and hard woods. With any of wood pieces, a check of the construction might disclose much about the quality. Just lift a corner and note if it feels sturdy and heavy. Examine the corners and determine weather they feel well-built and secure.
